FAQ

What is diagnostic ultrasound?

Diagnostic ultrasounds are used as an imaging technique. It can be sub-divided into anatomical and functional ultrasound. An anatomical ultrasound, images internal organs and other structures (ex. fetus, heart etc.). A functional ultrasound (ex. Doppler, elastography etc.) combines information such as the movement of tissue or blood, softness or hardness of tissue, and other physical characteristics, with anatomical images to help doctors visualize changes/differences in function within a structure or organ.

What is therapeutic ultrasound?

Therapeutic ultrasounds are used primarily for two different effects: the deep heating treatment and non-thermal uses. Deep Heating Effect Ultrasounds are often used to provide deep heating to soft tissue structures in the body. Non-Thermal Effects (Cavitation) Ultrasounds introduce energy into the body that causes microscopic gas bubbles around your tissues to expand and contract rapidly which may help speed cellular processes and improves healing of injured tissue.

How are ultrasounds performed?

An ultrasound is performed with a machine that has an ultrasound transducer (sound head). A small amount of EcoGel™/EcoLotion™ is applied to the specific body part/area; then your physician and/or technician slowly moves the sound head in a small circular direction on your body. The physician and/or technician may change various settings on the ultrasound unit to control the depth of penetration of the ultrasound waves or change the intensity of the ultrasound.

Once the procedure is complete, EcoGel™ can be removed with a soft tissue or cloth (excess EcoLotion™ can be massaged into the skin).

What is the difference between EcoGel™ and EcoLotion™?

EcoGel™ and EcoLotion™ can be used for therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Those who conduct prolonged procedures would benefit from EcoGel™ as it does not absorb quickly and therefore less product is required.
Those who conduct therapeutic or quicker procedures would benefit from EcoLotion™. This product is soothing, moisturizing and excess product may be massaged into the skin.

Why is ultrasound gel or lotion used?

Ultrasound gel or lotion is used to eliminate any air pockets which would block ultrasound waves from passing into the body. They allow for clearer images and allow the transducer to move smoothly and freely.

Why are there different colours?

Colours do not affect ultrasound equipment as it uses sound to produce heat or images. Technicians may choose blue or green to help visualize areas where gel is used. Our clear gel may be used for patients who prefer a more sensitive formula as there is no fragrance or colouring added.

Why are there different viscosities?

Viscosity is a measurement used to describe the thickness of liquids.
We offer a range of gel viscosities and colours so there is something for everyone!

High-viscosity gels (EcoGel™ 200 HV & EcoGel™ 300) are thicker and therefore ideal for TENS, IPL or prolonged treatments.

Medium-viscosity gels (EcoGel™ 200) are the most common as they can be used for a variety of procedures and are not too thick or fluid.

Low-viscosity gels (EcoGel™ 100) are preferred by OB/GYN’s as they offer the least resistance and have minimal air bubbles.

Why we use LDPE bottles instead of HDPE bottles?

LDPE stands for Low-Density Polyethylene (soft) and HDPE stands for High-Density Polyethylene (rigid). LDPE is resistant to impact, moisture-proof, can withstand harsh chemicals and is recyclable!

Our research has unanimously concluded that technicians prefer LDPE bottles, as they are easier to squeeze, due to their flexibility, and are therefore less likely to cause any long-term health effects such as Arthritis or Carpal Tunnel.

Why we use SimpliSqueeze® caps?

Patient safety is at the forefront of our products and packaging. SimpliSqueeze® caps allow for intuitive, clean and safe handling, which improves patient compliance. The handling of the SimpliSqueeze® is intuitive for users and allows for easy, exact dosing by just squeezing the bottle.

Consumers prefer SimpliSqueeze® for convenient, clean dispensing of gels and lotions.

What does Bacteriostatic mean?

All Eco-Med Pharmaceutical Inc. ultrasound gels are bacteriostatic. This means our product prevents bacteria from reproducing so they are safer, for longer!

Why is Propylene Glycol harmful?

Research has found that Propylene Glycol may cause minor skin irritations or allergic reactions in some individuals. Although not banned, we have chosen to proactively formulate our ultrasound gels without Propylene Glycol, to ensure all patients are safe.

Why we opted for a Paraben Free formula?

Parabens are used in many topical products to increase shelf-life and found to mimic’s the human hormone estrogen. Some patients may experience hormonal imbalance, allergies, irritation, hives or redness from using products that contain it.

We put patients first and have removed parabens from all our ultrasound gel products!
